This Earthcache takes you to the top of a kame, Hart's Hill,
located in Hart Park in Round Lake, Illinois. The climb is steep
but worth the view once you are up on top.
What is a kame? It is an irregular shaped hill consisting of mostly
sands and gravels. They can form a couple different ways. Either
material is deposited in crevasses that occur in the glacial ice or
off the edge of the glacier forming a delta. Melt water choked with
sediment flow on top of the glacier and as the water flows it
washes away the lighter sediments leaving behind sands and gravels.
Once the glacial ice melts back from the area, these mounds of
sands and gravels are exposed.
This particular kame occurs in the Valparaiso moraine that is found
covering much of the western half of Lake County, Illinois. This
moraine, area where glaciers stabilize for an extended length of
time, also includes a variety of other glacial features the most
obvious are the kettle lakes. Round Lake is named after one of
these kettle lakes.
Aside from being recreational areas, kames can also serve as sand
and gravel resources. Many of the local gravel pits owe their
existence to kames.
To log this earthcache you need to do the following:
1. Email me the name and location Lake County's most famous kame
that is also the highest point in Lake County, Illinois.
2. Take a picture of yourself with the larger of the two signs at
the top of Hart's Hill. If you are by yourself, take a picture of
your GPS with the sign clearly in the background.
3. Please determine the elevation difference between the Warming
House/Concession Building near the base of the kame and the base of
the sign at the top of the kame where you took your picture. Please
email this along with the answer for question 1, do not post it in
your log.

February 1 by behmSquad (1121 found) The kame was like one big icy glacier today. This made the trip up the hill difficult and slow. Had the sled hill been open, all the ice could have made for a quick trip down. I'm jealous of this hill; it's much bigger than our neighborhood bumps. Email sent. TFTC

January 12 by canoecolt (1070 found) It was frigidly cold this 12th night of January as I climbed the solidly snow packed hill. It was about 5 minutes before closing. Lights were bright and there was a handful of sledders braving the cold aiming for the moguls. Fun! Kames and Earthcaches are absolutely cool. Thanks for sharing information on Lake County's own geological formation.

November 22, 2009 by moodygrrl (4014 found) Badlands emailed our answers already, we had a great day for our trek. In another couple of weeks this kame will be a lot busier! Up North with Badlands and Corp of Discovery targeting some non-traditional hides--solved puzzles, earth caches, letter-boxes, etc. Thanks for adding to the fun!
