Country Life – A Former Swimming Hole Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

TurdleEggs: It looks like the pit is back in operation so the reason for this cache placement has gone away. I’m removing it. Thanks to everyone who found it.

Geocache Description:

The cache is near Ste Genevieve and is a short drive off highway followed by a short, but uneven walk. The container is a regular sized ammo box. The cache may be covered in snow in the winter, but will take a shovel hit if you decide to dig it out.

What better way to spend a hot afternoon in the country than in the clear blue waters of the local swimming hole. This large swimming hole, with it's channels and islands, is a popular oasis for locals looking to cool off.

Edit: Peat moss comes from a bog but big tracked equipment gets stuck in a swamp. In draining the water to mine the peat moss the old swimming hole has dried up and is now a nice gravel flat.

If you explore further south, you'll see where hundreds of acres of land is being mined for peat moss which is then trucked to Winnipeg. Back in Winnipeg the top few inches of black earth from formal agricultural land is removed before new housing developments go in, mixed with the peat (and other materials) and sold back to Winnipeg home owners.

This cache was created to add to the number of QUALITY caches hidden in Manitoba. It is an official BLITZ cache for the May Madness event. Hope you enjoy the hunt!
