Warning

Please note: To use the services of geocaching.com, you must agree to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

NOTE: On 8/31/09, the cache was replaced by a magnetic micro on an object within 5-10 feet of the original hiding place, which is no longer there. Should be an easier find now.

THE CACHE IS NOT AT THE POSTED COORDINATES. Solve the puzzle below to determine the actual coordinates. Note: Although it’s not necessary to visit the posted coordinates, you will need to project a waypoint from the posted coordinates to find the cache.

Your mission—should you choose to accept it—is not for the faint of heart. You’ve received a message from HQ: assassins are on the loose! Routine monitoring of Internet message boards has revealed suspicious activity on the part of a gang of killers led by rogue cache policeman W. von Busybody.

HQ has intercepted several messages in a variety of codes. They’ve broken some of the codes and believe these assassins are using a drop box in the tri-state area to pass messages back and forth. It’s your job to crack the remaining messages to find the location of their secret drop box.

Here are the messages you’ve been tasked with cracking:

Message 1

Message 2

Message 3

Your mission: crack the codes. Take them in order. The first is easy, but they get progressively more difficult. The second message holds the key to solving the last message. You’ll also need to do some field work along the way.

To make life easier for field agents like you, HQ has a pre-printed Field Cipher Worksheet for you to use. Print a copy to keep with you. You’ll need it.

Based upon your field training, you remember that the final message is a simple Vernam Cipher. The first step is to copy the numbers from the secret message into the “Cipher Number” boxes on the Field Cipher Worksheet. The key—once you uncover it—must be copied repeatedly into the “Additive Number” boxes below the Cipher Numbers. To determine the “Code Numbers,” simply subtract the “Additive Number” from the “Cipher Number.” The “Code Numbers” can then be converted to “Plain Characters” with the chart at the bottom of the Field Cipher Worksheet.

When you’ve decoded the message, follow the instructions to find the cache and stop the assassins! When you go to find the cache, stealth will be absolutely necessary. Remember: You’re a spy. Act like it! There is plenty of parking nearby. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks to Know Future for the inspiration for this cache!

I solved this puzzle a while back, but the cache turned up missing. I did not have any trouble finding it this time. A very nice puzzle. Thanks for this cache, and especially replacing it. Decided to come to town and find a few caches before my son's soccer game at 6pm.

Previous cache container went missing, along with its entire hiding spot. Has been replaced with a magnetic micro on an object within 5-10 feet of the original ground zero. Should be even easier to find now.

Stopped by and sure enough, the old cache hiding spot had been removed. So I replaced it with a magnetic micro on a nearby object (still within 5-10 feet of the original final location). Should be even easier to find now. Good to go!

I almost gave up on this one. I solved the puzzle a few weeks back, but there was so many people out and about as we were trying to find it, that we felt a little uncomfortable. Then this car pulls up, gives us the once over and then pulls off. At first I thought it was the police, after all of the other run-ins today, but evidently they were fellow cachers. They soon returned when we gave them the secret sign and handshake. Mrs. Fuquay had the cache in hand before we could hardly get introductions over with. I wish Tommy could hunt like that.

Figured this one out without any hints in a combined total of about 3 hours!! Shocking isn't it, no hints, that's a first for me on an OP puzzle!! We got to ground zero and there was a car parked directly in front of where we needed to be with 2 guys sitting in it. We decided to leave and come back later, but as we were pulling out I noticed it looked like they were messing with a GPS (of course it could have been a cell phone). So we pulled back around and they were holding a geocaching hat where we could see it. They hadn't been able to find it yet. He pointed me in the right direction and I started looking and ended up with it in hand in about a minute! We both signed it and chatted a short bit. Nice meeting a fellow cacher!

Had everything I needed but never figured out how to use it all. This was a hard and time-consuming puzzle and I'm glad to get it off the list. The final coords were right on. Thanks for the fun.

Aaarrrggh. I thought I was going to have a FTF today. Figured out all of the clues with no problem. Got to the coordinates snuck in graves the cache opened it up and April fools someone beat me to it. I was bamboozzled. I thought it was funny that the original coordinates was the place where their assassins took out that stray kitty a few years ago.

After about six hours and an error on my part correcting email I had it solved. Now if the skies don't open up before I can get over there. The rain didn't start real hard until I was safe in the book store with a small stack to wile away the time. I knew there wasn't going to be anymore caching today.
Keeping the streak alive one cache at a time.
