Geocache Description:

This is a small screw top container wrapped in camo duct tape. It holds a log and can hold tiny trinkets. Please bring your own pen, and please replace EXACTLY as you found it.

Phillip James Butterfield, Jr. (November 30, 1926 in Tampa, Florida – November 26, 2002) was a head football coach. He coached at Ithaca College from 1967 to 1994. During his 28 seasons at Ithaca College, Butterfield was one of the most successful coaches in the country having won 206 games and 3 NCAA Division III titles. His record in the playoffs was an impressive 21-8. After his retirement, Ithaca College renamed the football stadium in his honor. Butterfield was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.

Butterfield died of cancer in 2002.

On September 19, 1992, before a crowd of 4,417 fans, which included former players and then-NCAA executive director Dick Schultz, South Hill Field was renamed Jim Butterfield Stadium. The move by the Ithaca College Board of Trustees placed the name most associated with the school’s football program on the facility. Butterfield joined Grambling’s Eddie Robinson and Roy Kidd of Eastern Kentucky as college football’s only active coaches to have their home field named for them.

This cache will take you Butterfield Stadium, up close and personal. The athletes at Ithaca College use this stadium for practices as well as game day football!

BE CAREFUL! Since this is used for practices, muggle activity is high. Also, do not venture here at night, unless you want to explain what you are doing to Campus Safety.

Enjoy!
