LI Motor Parkway #11 -
Alley Pond Park Bridge
A small lock and lock hidden
near a part of the Long Island Motor
Parkway
The Long Island Motor Parkway has been described as the first
"high-speed, limited access, reinforced-concrete, landscaped
parkway". It was the brainchild of William "Willie" K. Vanderbilt
Jr. and was built in several stages, eventually running from 195th
Street in Queens to Lake Ronkonkoma, a distance of 48 miles. The
first section of 9 miles opened on October 10, 1908, running from
Merrick Avenue to Round Swamp Road. The Vanderbilt Cup Race was run
on October 24 of that year over a 28 mile course, including these 9
miles.
This cache is located near one of the remaining Long Island Motor
Parkway bridges. This old brick bridge carries the parkway just
east of the Grand Central Parkway. It's the last remaining parkway
bridge of its kind in Queens County. This part of the parkway is
now being utilized as a bike path, called the NYC Greenway. After
the demise of the parkway, Robert Moses used the space for a bike
path. This path leads to some play fields between the Grand Central
Parkway and Union Turnpike. It stretches from Brooklyn to Queens.
This is a small section of Alley Pond Park. The cache is a small,
lock-n-lock with a log, a pencil, and some cars. It's only a few
feet off the trail, but watch out for poison ivy! The cache
should be an easy find. It's hidden well, so please be sure to
rehide the cache with care and accuracy. On nice days, the bike
path is filled with muggles; please be stealthy. Thank you for your
cooperation!
Thanks go to BobNMLI for not only starting this great
series, but allowing us to contribute to it!
Congrats to BroKarl on the
FTF!
