As many of us often do, I hike with my music playing. As I hiked along, semi-looking for somewhere to place a cache. I spied a black raven perched on a hoodoo. Okay so it was more of a rock outcropping, but that doesn't sound as good. As I was seeing all this the song "Marie Lavaux" came on. Hence, Voodoo on a Hoodoo.

Voodoo Hoodoo superstitions and spells
Many superstitions also related to the practice of Hoodoo developed within the Voodoo tradition in Louisiana. While these superstitions are not central to the Voodoo faith, their appearance is partly a result of Voodoo tradition in New Orleans and have since influenced it significantly.

  • If you lay a broom across the doorway at night, a witch can't come in and hurt you.
  • Having a woman visit you the first thing on Monday mornings is bad luck for the rest of the week. (From my experience this also applies if she is still there on Monday morning)
  • Don't borrow or lend salt because that is bad luck.
  • If you sweep trash out of the house after dark you will sweep away your luck. Don't shake a tablecloth outside after dark or someone in your family will die.
  • To stop a Voodoo spell being placed upon you, acquire some bristles from a pig cooked at a Voodoo ritual, tie the bristles into a bundle and carry them on you at all times. (This is a tough one, I don't think many pigs are cooked at Voodoo rituals in Carson City)
  • If a woman sprinkles some salt from her house to yours, it will give you bad luck until you clean the salt away and put pepper over your door sill. (I'm not taking any chances with this one; I'm off to Costco to by pepper!!)
  • If a woman wants her husband to stay away from other woman, she can do so by putting a little of her blood in his coffee, and he will never quit her.
  • If a woman's husband dies and you don't want her to marry again, cut all of her husband's shoes all in little pieces, just as soon as he is dead, and she will never marry again.
  • You can give someone a headache by taking and turning their picture upside down. (Notice I didn't post a picture here?)
  • You can harm a person in whatever way you want to by getting a lock of his hair and burning some and throwing the rest away.
  • You can make a farmer's well go dry by putting some soda in the well for one week, each day; then drawing a bucket of water out and throwing it in the river to make the well go dry.

A hoodoo
(also tent rock, fairy chimney, earth pyramid) is a tall thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos are composed of soft sedimentary rock and are topped by a piece of harder, less easily-eroded stone that protects the column from the elements. They are mainly located in the desert in dry, hot areas. In common usage, the difference between hoodoos and pinnacles or spires is that hoodoos have a variable thickness often described as having a "totem pole-shaped body." A spire, on the other hand, has a smoother profile or uniform thickness that tapers from the ground upward. (Geology purists do note that only a tall formation should be called a hoodoo; any other shape is called a 'hoodoo rock'.) Hoodoos range in size from that of an average human to heights exceeding a 10-story building. Hoodoo shapes are affected by the erosional patterns of alternating hard and softer rock layers. Minerals deposited within different rock types cause hoodoos to have different colors throughout their height.

Good luck on your hunt.

Well I can't say that I came prepared for this one but I really, really loved it. We needed this one to fill a square on our diff/terr chart so I came down with the Jeep thinking I would drive up and take on this challenge. Hmmm, no four wheeling up here...surprise. Parked near the fencing and followed the trails all the way up. Very peaceful place to take a stroll and the weather was perfect! I got closer and closer to the goal and started to worry a bit. Continued to follow the arrow and, since the coords were absolutely dead on, I lucked into finding the goods in the very first place I peaked. Thanks for bringing me out here and introducing me to such a great place. Wonderful place for a cache.

I had to pick up some masonry stuff in Mound House and knew I would drive by this one on my way home. It was time for a little hike before lunch. Headed up the little canyon where the owner had confirmed this one was. Watched the arrow on the way up and nailed GZ from 1/3 mile away. Knew the path went around the back side, so it was an easy hike. Car to GZ 10 minutes. Set my gps, fanny pack and walking stick down in antiipation of a long hunt. However, I got lucky - maybe 2 minutes. Wind just about blew me off the rock and I had to be real careful with the log to keep it from blowing into the river. Will return for the others up here another day. TFTH and short hike!

We like to hike in the area, and this location is perfect for a good lung challenge. After a couple of lame attempts to find (that means you only looked for less than 30 minutes) we finally found this one. We were out with 1 of "Two Big Dogs", only there were really 2 big dogs with us (don't ask me to explain in 100 words or less). This was a great challenge!! Thanks for the fun!!
