Geocache Description:

Image of the tile mural at listed coordinates

Part of the Fox Locks series, this set of caches is intended to bring about an awareness and appreciation for the For River Lock system, a series that is gradually being expanded upon to include all 17 locks in the Fox Cities chain including Little Chute and Kaukauna. The State of Wisconsin assumed ownership of the system and began restoration in 2006. Today, navigation is again possible from Lake Winnebago to Green Bay

At the posted cords you will be standing in front of the Fox Locks signage for the Menasha Lock and a great tile mural of the lock in operation. This signage contains a nice summary of the lock series ownership and will provide answers to the questions below.

The Fox River navigation system has had a number of owners since its completion in 185E. In just a short time the original owners went bankrupt, in 18DD, and after the company was reformed, they sold the system off to the United States Government in 18CF. The feds put the system into the hands of the Army Corps of Engineers and tasked them with surveying and repairing the system which they completed in 19A0. For decades, the USCE maintained the system, operating the locks and dredging the canals. While commercial use dwindled to a standstill, recreational use continued to grow. Even though the USCE complete a rebuild less that a decade earlier in 19CB, it was faced with mounting maintenance and operational costs and the government decided it was no longer a priority for them, shutting all but 3 of the 17 locks down at the end of the 198C season. This lock managed to say open until the formation of the Fox River Navigational System which began work in 2006 to bring all the locks back on-line.
