Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden near monument in Dražgoše village.

Vaščani so nato doživeli najgrozovitejši dan v svojem življenju.

ENG: One of the worst war horrors in Slovenia took place in Dražgoše at the beginning of 1942. On New Year's Eve 1941, Cankar's battalion came to the village and settled here. The villagers offered to help the partisans, so the occupier took revenge on 9 January. German soldiers attacked the partisans in the village, and the shooting continued on January 10 and 11, when the partisans retreated to Jelovica. The villagers then experienced the most horrific day of their lives. The Germans killed 41 locals, burned houses and outbuildings, as well as a school and a church. Some villagers fled to Jelovica, while the rest were taken to Šentvid by the Germans. From there, they were soon fired and had to settle with acquaintances or relatives. However, the occupier did not have enough revenge, so in February 1942 he returned to the fire and mined the village to the ground. In memory of the Battle of Dražgoše, a monument was made on 22 July 1976 in a place that can be seen far from the valley, and at the same time has a beautiful view. The architectural shell was designed by ing. arch. Boris Kobe. In the lower part of the monument is a space with a memorial plaque and a bronze ossuary decorated with reliefs (academic sculptor Stojan Batič) with the remains of the victims of Dražgoše. Immediately below the road at the descent to the monument, a mosaic with scenes of the Battle of Dražgoše and the Battle of Mošenjska planina (academic painter Ivo Šubic) was made in a semicircle on an area of 16 m2, where Cankar's battalion withdrew.
