Geocache Description:

Credit River - Shipwreck Series

Astron
April 7,1978

There are many shipwrecks around the world. Some very famous and others not so. Each however has it’s own story to tell. As you travel along the Credit River doing this series of caches, we have highlighted a number of these shipwrecks. During low water levels on these parts of the Credit River, you need to be careful in a canoe or kayak so as you don’t wind up in your own shipwreck. Besides the many large rocks along the way, there are also some other obstacles such as dams which should be avoided. All of the geocaches in this series have been placed on foot by walking in the water along the credit river. Whichever way you choose to search for these caches, use caution and common sense.
More information about this series can be found here: Credit River - Shipwreck Series

Astron
The Astron (previously named Esmeralda and Bonnie) is a shipwreck located off the coast of Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. She was a Russian owned freighter built in France by Chantiers de l'Atlantique during 1957. She was 127 metres (139 yards) long, weighed 27,990 tons, and was powered by motor.

She was delivering 60 tons of corn to Cuba on 7 April 1978, when she ran aground in Punta Cana during a storm. She broke apart into two pieces with the bow above the water and the stern underwater, with 7,330 barrels of bunker fuel being recorded to have been lost by the incident. The ship is in water 16 metres (17 yards) deep, meaning it can be visited by scuba diving..

On a personal note, thewhytes (Mr. and Mrs. that is) enjoyed walking the beach from the resort down to this particular ship wreck, while visiting the area. Mr. Whyte would love to go diving on this wreck one day.

Congrats flinhi on FTF!!!
