Great Salt Bay
photo: Team Teebow
The Salt Bay Heritage Trail is a beautiful, well-maintained waterfront trail just a short distance from downtown Damariscotta. You'll be afforded excellent views of Salt Bay, where ospreys, cormorants, loons, and bald eagles are often sighted. The trail itself offers quite a wide variety of terrain (marsh to forest) but stays relatively flat.
To reach the trail, take Route 215 north from either business or bypass Route 1. Almost immediately on your left you'll see the Lincoln County News. Park here, on the left side of the lot. Parking coords are: N 44° 02.527, W069° 31.992. Trailhead is just across the street. *NOTE: Although it's closer to the cache, I don't recommend parking on the Route 1 bypass; traffic moves very swiftly and it can be dangerous. Plus you'll miss the beauty of the trail. Figure on 45 minutes to an hour round trip from the trailhead.*
If you have time, check out the Glidden Middens nearby--it's a fascinating spot with a lot of history.
Cache is a green ammo can.
Enjoy and au revoir!
