Geocache Description:

The cache is located at Havenwoods State Forest just off a limestone trail. The trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible except when snow-covered and during spring melt. The cache cannot be reached from a wheelchair. Park in the parking lot less than half a mile from the cache. Havenwoods is open from 6am to 8pm daily. There is no entrance fee.

The camouflage-covered cache is about the size of a pencil box. There is room for small trade items. Download a trail map.

In the early 1900s, this land was some of the best farmland in the Town of Granville. Milwaukee County started purchasing the land from farmers in 1904. In 1917, the Milwaukee County House of Correction moved from Wind Lake Avenue to this location. The prisoners worked the land, growing food for the prison inmates and residents of other county institutions. In 1939 alone, the prison kitchen canned 1350 gallons of corn, 2442 gallons of cucumber relish, 5534 gallons of tomatoes, and much more! The prisoners also operated a dairy farm that provided fresh milk, butter, and cheese for the inmates.

The first photo shows a panoramic view of the prison complex in 1949 (this is after the Army took over the land from the county). The second photo shows the front of the main prison administration building. This building was where the parking lot is today.

The cache was created by map turtle in 2009.
