Once upon a time, a long time ago, Price's Peak boasted a
forest fire watch tower. But, sadly, now it is long gone, and
it's former position is not even marked with a radio tower,
like so many other similar sites.
At an elevation of 730 feet, Price's Peak's lookout was originally
built in 1940 on Washington Division of Forestry land. At that time
it was a 10x10 foot, two story "smokehouse". By 1957, the Division
of Forestry had become the Department of Natural Resources, and the
"smokehouse" had been replaced with a 40' wooden live-in tower. It
was gone by 1970. There are no know photos of either structure.
As you can see from the photo, there is little there now. Other
than the clearing, there is little evidence that there ever was
anything here. It is quite possible that there is a view, but we
were surrounded by fog while we were there and were unable to see
much.
About the cache:
- This cache is on publicly accessible Weyerhaeuser land. Access
is granted to the public only during weekends and only during
daylight hours.
- If you visit during berry seasons, be aware that Round Up
and/or other similar herbicides are used in this area on both sides
of the roads up to 25' away. It is not recommended that you eat
berries that grow close to the road.
- There are good dirt roads all the way to the lookout site. You
will ultimately be looking to turn off on road C-2600. Auto-routing
will probably not help much with that last turn.
- This cache is dedicated to my co-worker Tommy Price, just
because his last name is Price.
- You are searching for a regular sized Lock 'n' Lock in a nylon
camo bag.
- There is a worthwhile FTF prize.
