The Willamette Meridian is the principle line for land surveying in
Washington State. It runs due north from Portland, Oregon
(Birthplace of Geocaching!) through Thurston County. The initial
point was established by the Surveyor General of the Oregon
Territory, John Preston on June 4, 1851 in what is now Washington
Park, near the Portland Zoo. William Ives ran the line due north
from the initial point, setting mile and half-mile posts until he
reached Puget Sound at the Nisqually Reach in August of 1851 at
what is now the end of Meridian Road Northeast. The William Ives
Nature Trail is 1.5 miles long and was dedicated in 1999. The first
portion is a pleasant stroll through a wooded forest with native
plants and occasional glimpses of a golf course. There is a pond
with a strange shade of aqua colored water at the furthest point of
the trail. At this point you have an opportunity to snuggle up to
the Scotchbroom and circle the pond on the upper trail -or take the
shortcut over to the last portion of the trail which follows a
dirt/gravel road back to form most of a loop. The official parking
area is temporarily closed due to nearby construction. However the
pull out in front of the gate can be used for parking. Please don't
block the gate. Additional parking during weekdays is available at
the pull out before the one for the trail-head , this is also the
official end of the trail and is a short walk down the sidewalk.
See coordinates above.
