This cache is located on a street in OC marked with one of the most prized street signs on the Delmarva peninsula and perhaps in the mid-atlantic region.
Assawoman Dr. we assume takes its name from the nearby Assawoman Bay. There are other geographical features in the region that use the name Assawoman.
When we came up with the idea for this cache we envisioned a more in-depth write up on the origins of the name. In reality, there is not much out there. According to Geological Survey Bulletin 1245 called "Delaware Place Names", printed in 1966, Assawoman is an Algonkian word meaning "midway fishing stream". Originally the bay was named Assateague Sound and was later changed to Assawoman. Obviously the word has no relation to the english word woman and may have been inititally spelled Assawaman.
Due to the jokes regarding this word that was eventually used to name this tiny road in north Ocean City, the street sign became a hot collectors item, primarly with high school seniors and college students who used them to decorate their dorm rooms.
Eventually Ocean City got wise and made the signs infintely more difficult to steal. But that doesn't make them any less beloved by visitors to OC who chuckle under their breath.
UPDATE: May, 2020. Ocean City has been redoing the sidewalk corners which resulted in removing the previous hiding spot. We had to come up with something new on the fly which is ultimately a bit harder than the previous hide and I'm not sure how muggle resistant it will be but we'll find out. Coords, hint and difficulty have been updated accordingly. Hide can still be accessed easily from the sidewalk and does not require entering the street or any nearby private properties. Check the hint if you need some help. You may need to pull on it a bit hard but once you find it, please be gentle and please replace it completely so as not to be detected by muggles.
