Geocache Description:

While doing Speedy's I noticed a walking track marked with orange triangles and followed it a little way. It's an interesting walk that takes you up the (very high) banks of the stream, along possum trappers' lines and ridges - so I decided to come back and find a place for a follow-up cache.

Start at Speedy's and follow the orange triangle markers. This is not a track for a casual walk, as it crosses the stream twice and is muddy, steep and slippery in places.

GPS reception is pretty bad for most of the walk, so this description should help you find the spot.

It's a track of two halves:

The first follows the stream, crossing it twice in the first ten minutes (we wore gumboots to start with and then swapped to walking shoes after the second crossing) and then rising along the side. The track is narrow, follows the edge of a steep hill, and gravelly, although shows signs of recent maintenance. After about half an hour's climb, you'll reach a ridge where the track has a T intersection - the orange triangles go left, while the right fork is marked with pink squares - follow the orange.

The second half moves away from the stream, but is muddier and steeper - easy to slip despite the steps cut into the bank every now and then. After another half hour or so you'll reach a 4 way intersection where I managed to get +/-5m reception to mark the cache.

All up, it's about an hour to the cache and an hour back.

Cache is a 500 ml clear Systema container, hidden under a stump within 30cm of track.

Original contents were notebook, pencil and sharpener, kiwi stamp, lego-shaped eraser, another sharpener, and a Knit-Wit Trackable.

FTF Honours go to agcnz (apparently with Yeetrees), followed by StreetwalkerNZ and Orsome4some. The Orsome crew reminded me that there's a good viewing point not far from the cache - at S41 10.956 E174 55.218, so check that out when you're hunting.
Thanks to the Orsome4some, there are now a handful of other caches in the area, so it's a good round trip. Those that don't like steep climbs might find it easier to start in Belmont and get GC3V9NP first, coming at the cache from the opposite direction to the description above.
