Roku 1879 ho koupil knize Josef Colloredo - Mansfeld.

Behem 2. svetove valky musel byt zamek uvolnen nemecke jednotce.

O letnich mesicich na Zbiroh mimo mnohe jine umelce take pravidelne jezdival Frana Sramek - (1877 -1952), sve zazitky zde pak zachytil v romanech Stribrny vitr a v Pasti.

VIEW OF ZBIROH
(Text copied from www.zbiroh.cz)

City Zbiroh (452 m above sea level) lies on the eastern slope of the castle´s hill (546 m) from lydites. Zbiroh is a rugged, relatively poor agricultural upland with vast well preserved forests. Zbiroh lies on the boundary of Krivoklátsko, which is a UNESCO protected biosphere reserve.

The city's name Zbiroh experienced numerous changes during its history . From Sbirow, Sbyrow, castrum Sbyroh, Swiroho, Sbyeroh, Zbirow, Zbirov and since 1913 the official name is Zbiroh.

The first written document mentioning Zbiroh castle dates in 1230. Chren of Zbirov (de Sbirova) and his brother Sulislav of the genus Sulislavci were the first holders of the castle. Another subsequent holder of Zbiroh worth mentioning is the Czech king Jan of Luxembourg and Charles IV. Since 1336 the castle was held with the corresponding settlement by the Rosenberg family. In 1369 Zbiroh was promoted to a market village and stamped with a red five-petalled rose in a silver field, the city seal and the rights to hold markets, brewing and other freedoms.

The events of the Thirty Years´ War taking place in Zbiroh were as tragic as everywhere else. In 1634 the Swedes burned the whole town down. They looted and plundered some nearby villages, some of which then perished for good. The castle was devastated in 1639.

In 1868 Zbiroh was sold for 10 million florins to a Prussian businessman Bethel Henry Strousberg. He wanted to create a huge industrial complex of iron here. From 1869 to 1870 Strousberg quickly rebuilt the castle Zbiroh into a splendid residence and fit it sumptuously. His far-reaching plans met with a complete failure after a crash on the Vienna Stock Exchange in 1873. The estate was sold at auction in 1877 .

In 1879 it was purchased by Prince Josef Colloredo - Mansfeld. Initially lived the Colloredo - Mansfelds in Zbiroh only occasionally, yet consistently since 1913. In the years 1910 - 1928 in a large Strousberg Hall, illuminated through a glass roof at that time, created the world-famous painter Alfons Mucha his monumental works. The most famous is the series of paintings - the Slav Epic.

In 1897 Zbiroh was promoted to city Zbiroh by the Emperor Franz Joseph 1st.

During the World War II the castle was overtaken by the German army. After 1945 the castle became a state property and in 1990 the castle was restituted to Colloredo - Mansfeld family, who sold it to the czech state.

The most famous native is a poet and translator Josef Vaclav Sladek - (1845 -1912).
