The Ocean Shore had a short life from 1907-1920, running south from San Francisco along the rugged San Mateo coast. Intended to reach to Santa Cruz, instead it ended not far south of Half Moon Bay.
The businessmen behind the Ocean Shore also intended to profit by developing vacation properties along the coastal right of way. Vallemar was one of these resort stations, now combined with other former Ocean Shore resorts into the town of Pacifica. The Vallemar station still stands, in use as a restaurant and very close to its original condition.
Due to an existing nearby hide, the cache is offset from the station itself. The hide is near a popular trailhead providing access to Mori Point. The Ocean Shore did not round the point, but was instead blasted through the hills in a giant roadcut, now occupied by Hiway 1.
To see the old station, proceed south through the roadcut to N 37 36.807 W 122 29.246. Turn left at the light for parking access, and be sure to check out the interesting etched glass panes around the front door. We haven't tried the food, you're on your own there!
