Geocache Description:

Event cache on consisting of a hike and picnic at one of Arizona's most popular state parks. Claim one cache on the hike and claim this event cache by meeting fellow geocacachers for a picnic andbarbecue after the hike.

The date of this event is Sunday, March 14, 2004, beginning at 9:00 am.

Join your fellow geocachers on Sunday, March 14, 2004 for hiking and a barbecue picnic at Picacho Peak State Park. This park is conveniently located just off I-10 between Phoenix and Tucson.

This event will start in the morning with a hike to the summit of Picacho Peak. At the summit, we will find this geocache at the summit of the peak. Afterwards, we will meet at Cholla Ramada for a potluck picnic and barbecue.

We will meet at the Picacho Peak trailhead at 9:00 am to begin our hike. Hike to the summit at your own pace, and be sure you get the Picacho Peak cache at the summit. After reaching the summit, finding the geocache, and descending the peak, meet all of your fellow geocachers at Cholla Ramada (coordinates above) for the post-hike festivities. Please bring food and drinks to share. There are barbecue grills available, so bring charcoal and grilling food.

While everyone is encouraged to hike to the summit, the hike is optional, so all you need to do in order to earn credit for this cache is to join us at the afternoon picnic. The picnic is expected to begin when most of the hikers complete the hike, expected between noon and 1:00 pm.

The second weekend of March is the best time of year to visit Picacho Peak, as this weekend is the time of the annual Civil War in the Southwest. Picacho Peak was near the site of the westernmost battle of the Civil War, and battle re-enactments and other events are scheduled from Saturday, March 13 through Sunday, March 14.

We will award a grand prize of a 30 cal. ammo can with logbook that the winner can place as a geocache. Please bring items to contribute to the cache. The winner can place this geocache in any good non-urban location, at least 0.5 miles away from a paved road or in a remote area without any nearby existing cache.

Thank you to all who attended who helped make this a successful event. Congratulations to golefts for winning the ammo can cache.
