Massachusetts City & Town Cache is a series of caches dedicated to documenting the origin of the names of towns in Massachusetts. This concept was "borrowed" with permission from SKYTREK in Connecticut. You get a little history lesson and log a “FIND”. All caches in this series will require you to find the coordinates (bring paper and pencil) to the final cache (in a local Park) from clues provided at the first locations.
The first white settler was John King who arrivedhere in 1716. The area was recognized as a plantation and was officially known as the "Elbow Tract" . It received a notable accession of population from a large Scotch-Irish colony which went from Ulster to Boston in 1718. In 1752 the plantation was incorporated as a district and given the name "Palmer" by the governor (apparently in honor of Thomas Palmer, esq. who had recently died in Scotland). Under a general state law of 1775 Palmer gained the legal rights of a township.
This is a simple multicache. Start by parking at the coordinates listed above. The final two digits of the Western coordinate can be found by counting the number of letters in the full name of the railroad recognized in the plaque set in the sidewalk immediately in front of this parking space. The final two digits of the Northern coordinate can be found by taking the number off the old engine in front of the Union Passenger Station and dividing it by two. Take the result and subtract the second digit and the last digit of year on the bridge over the railway.
Actual cache location: N 42 10.9xx W 72 18.2xx
