January 31 by tesser (1726 found) Fourth of the Big Island caches found today with she_wolf and woodknight54. It was a scary drive in my little Corolla, across the ruts from the bigger trucks and over the wide expanse of ice. Not used to driving on lakes! It was about 2 miles to the first cache from the Excelsior boat launch. We didn't go as straight as we could, but I tried to follow tire tracks the whole way. The rest of the day was PNGs for the most part! I could drive to within 200 feet of each of the others we tried. . I pulled up too soon on this one, and could have had a better walk from around the corner from where we parked. Our walk was a roller coaster to GZ. Once there, we thought we had the spot, then not, then moved on to five other spots before coming back and yes, that 1st spot was the spot, it was just better hidden than I thought! Winter will do that to ya! Good thing I had a multi-tool with me to help get to it. TFTC!

January 16 by DOC. (3428 found) Over this way today on an Extreme Caching Adventure with the Master of "Phooni-ness" and all things outside the edge of my comfort zone!OK, accessing the Big Island via the ice road... more than a mile from terra firma... in the faithful geomobile ... guided by the M.O.N.K.E.Y. 7400 navigational system now duct taped to the hood... was a little more than funny. Okay! I will be the first to admit my confusion over the plastic bag with the log in the tree. What? A KB hide on the Island? How could this be? We found the beacon then found the cache. Metal is sooooo sweet! TFTWF Island C, Doc.

January 10 by Moe the Sleaze (6561 found) No, the cache is not a plastic bag hanging in a tree. The cache is, and always has been, an ammo box.

January 10 by Erin80 (556 found) I am not claiming this one. reading the log noticed that this is a cache- cache and not a plastic bag hanging from a tree attached to a blue bungie cord at GZ. on a small piece of very wet paper inside the bag, it had the name of the cache and the last person to sign it in Nov. Attempted to sign it incase it was. perhaps muggled and left to dry?

November 8, 2009 by Sharknose Bunnies (1066 found) Yuusui made a nice find on this one, although we both had ground zero about 40 feet to the north-northwest. Still, a pretty straightforward find when you consider the beacons and use your geo-sense. We wondered if the building to the south was once part of the park, but it looked to almost have been a fish-cleaning house. Hard to imagine this was once an amusement park. Thanks for the cache! This was our eighth and final find on the island, as we went eight for eight today out here. Between the canoeing, the hiking, the views, and the geocaching, I'd have to say that this was one of my favorite geocaching trips ever! (657)

As we were signing the log the crazy Lucid and his ilk (or entourage) came walking up with icicles hanging from their noses after walking in from Excelsior. February 22, 2008 by FSU*Noles (7848 found) Second of two Big Island caches, walking across the ice with Maryufaust on a spectacularly warm and gorgeous sunny afternoon today - these caches have been on my list forever, and today it all came together for a fun and memorable caching experience! We strolled over here from the other cache nearby, dodging a pickup truck along the way, then followed the snowmobile tracks right to the cache location. There's some great history here, and the snowy woods were very scenic and the buildings were cool as well! Mary did the hard work getting the cache out of it's hidey-hole, and after signing the log and putting the cache back, we victoriously took the long trek back to the car. Boy do they ever grow some big houses along the shore there! Just a few hundred feet from shore, we were buzzed by a person flying a colorful contraption just barely over our heads - a quick bit of Internet research reveals it was an "Ultra Light Parachute Hang Glider". It was very cool, and gave us a great idea for the next island cache - now THAT would be cachin' in style! July 21, 2007 by NYSandy23 (1083 found) Out with KSteve and BBaka"L" for a day of fun and sun. Went for a walk in the woods after a walk in the milfoil to get to the path. Echoes of the past resound in the quiet woods. Signed log. Took Geo Coin to get on its way. Will return another day to place another TB. TFTC

July 2, 2007 by wayfarer222 (428 found) We came to this one on the back side and did a lot of bushwhacking--with plenty of mosquitoes and biting flies on the journey. Kind of eerie here with all of the abandoned buildings around. Spooked three deer.Nice find! SL Took an award pin. Left a travel bug and an art card from my studio. TFTC!

July 1, 2007 by FreiGuy (1395 found) Out boating on Lake Minnetonka today on a beautiful day. Told my wife and 2 daughters that my mission in life for today was to get both of the caches on Big Island. We pulled the boat up about 100 feet from this cache and walked right to it. Decided to trade travel bugs. I rescued the 4 that have been there for over a month, and dropped off the three that I had in my inventory. Very cool island, My oldest daughter and I did a lot of exploring on the island. The best part was when she opened a drawer in one of the abandoned houses and a mouse moved. I do believe she moved faster than the mouse ever could have. We loved looking at some of the old papers on the floors that were from the late 1940s. Food sure was cheap back then according to the supermarket ads. Thanks for a fantastic cache! FreiGuy and daughter Ashley

April 30, 2007 by Kurt Franke (2496 found) Found it, 3 of 8 today. STF and a big adventure for me.I was planning doing some caching in the Cities today. I had to be in town for a State Bicycle meeting this afternoon. The plan was to find 17 caches today, ending with the "Lair of the 3 Headed Woman" for number 700. I was working last night so I had everything I needed, ready to go, ASAP. I was up early with the first flight, waiting for my relief when I checked the website for any new cache listings. What is this, "Roller Coaster Big Island"? Interesting! I did some quick research on Lake Minnetonka the Big Island. If I go home and grab my canoe, paddle and PFD. I can do this. Got abit of a late start from home. Stopped along the way to grab a First To Find in Coon Rapids. Still, who would be going out after an island cache on a Monday morning? I didn't use a PWA to launch my canoe. Figured I didn't need much room, was mostly concerned about getting close. Drove to a point of land in Deephaven. Luckily, I found a small neighborhood park, the aptly named "Sandy Beach". I hit the water around 12:30 with a stiff wind at my back. My canoe sailed across the water. I had some concerns about paddling back but First To Find fever was in it's early stages. Landed on Big Island, very close to the "Big Island" cache so I found and logged it. Now on to bag the FTF I so richly deserved. Found the cache quickly, couldn't open it fast enough. It was filled with some nice geocoins and a couple of TBs. I opened the log book to sign that pristine first page, only to find "rickrich"? I looked at it again, "4/30/07 - 12:30 rickrich". Ha hah ha! Good job, fantastic! I dropped a couple TBs, grabbed a geocoin and discovered a couple others. I chased up 3 wild turkeys on my way back to my canoe. Once back I sat and watched the wind wipe the water for awhile. Luckily it was directly in my face. Finally I headed out, crawling back to Sandy Beach and safety. What a great adventure I had this morning. I scored a First To Find that I didn't deserve and missed one that I might have had. I remember thinking as I was heading toward Minnetonka, "I wonder if someone with an outboard will beat me to the cache? I think there are a few motor boats on Minnetonka." Thanks for the cache and for letting me record my longest log yet. TFTC, Kurt [This entry was edited by Kurt Franke on Tuesday, May 01, 2007 at 6:10:25 AM.]
