Another aspect of CITO other than cleaning up our environment,
is to nurture it as well. Together with TWEEC (Township of
Woolwich Environmental Enhancement
Committee) and the GRCA (Grand River
Conservation Authority) we will gather together to
plant some trees!
The posted coordinates are for the parking lot at the Community
Centre. We'll all meet up here and be either inside the building or
at the picnic shelter at 9:00am for greetings and to fuel up with
some coffee and timbits. Afterwards, we'll drive down to another
parking lot at the trailhead which will be near the starting point
of where the trees get planted.
We will be planting 85 trees along the old road leading from the
parking lot down to area by the Grand River. The trees will be a
variety of native species including sugar maple, green ash, burr
oak and hackberry. They will be 5' in height and will be supplied
by the GRCA. The holes will be pre-dug by machine auger, so some of
the grunt work will be done for us ahead of time. We may need to
clean up the holes a bit before the trees are set. We'll place the
trees, backfill, stake and place and mulch. The trees will likely
be bare root, so they will be fairly easy to handle. We will
receive some instruction on how the trees should be planted.
Arrangements are being made by TWEEC to see that the trees get
watered for awhile after planting to help them take root.

- Shovel
- Clothing appropriate for the weather
- Sunscreen (boy, I hope we need it!)
- FRS radio (if you have one)
UPDATE 15 April
The holes have been dug and partially refilled with topsoil (at
the request of GRCA) so that people won't fall in.
Mulch has been provided in some central piles and will need to
be distributed to all the trees.
I have some extra shovels, so I'll bring them along for those
coming on two-wheeled modes of transportation.
The long range forecast for Saturday is 14° and mainly sunny -
lets hope this holds true!
UPDATE 18 April
M3J is setting up a multi in the area which all attendees will
get first crack at before it goes live, so there will be a new
LOGGABLE cache in the area. From what I hear, it should be
something unique in these parts.
If you can believe it, the long range forecast from earlier in
the week is not only holding true, it's getting better! Sunny, high
of 18° with no chance of precipitation! Woo Hoo! (Somebody pinch
me!) However, there is usually a stiff breeze here and it will be
cooler in the morning, so please dress appropriately.
