Geocache Description:

To the west of Arrochar at the head of Loch Long there is a group of hills known as the Arrochar Alps. The most spectacular of these, although not the highest, is Ben Arthur or The Cobbler. The Narnain Stones lie at the base of the Cobbler and have a few interesting, but short rock climbing pitches.

Park in the sizeable car park at Succoth, at the head of Loch Long. When the cache was placed in 2005 it cost £1 to park here for the whole day. However, in August 2018 Argyll and Bute Council increased the charge to £9 per day (or £1 per hour in the other nearby car park). Cross the road (carefully!) and follow the path as it zig zags up the hill.

This end of Loch Long was used by the Admiralty during, and for some time after, the second world war as a torpedo testing range and the old pier and testing station still remain. Testing was stopped after a torpedo of the same type as being tested here exploded unexpectedly on land at another testing range. It is also rumoured that the Kilcreggan to Gourock ferry had a close shave when a runaway torpedo went a bit further than was intended one day. Find out more at Torpedo : Arrochar Travel Bug Hotel.

Continue on the path until you reach the Buttermilk Burn, and follow it past a small dam and into the boulder field. The Narnain Stones, which were deposited here during the last ice age, are the two largest stones here. The cache is about 200m before the stones and is only a few metres from the path. From here you get a good view of The Cobbler and you can decide whether, or not, to continue up to the summit and find the cache A Fine Corbett.

Please take care when retrieving and replacing the cache, as it's quite close to the path and you will be in full view of anyone passing by.
