Geocache Description:

An easy walk but it does become very muddy so please wear suitable footwear.

This is one of four micro caches we have placed around a couple of old pit sites, Mitchell Main and Darfield Main. Now that the weather has got colder we thought it might encourage people to get wrapped up and go for a walk. The caches can be done on their own or done together they form an easy, roughly 2 mile walk. If done together it is suggested you start at Mitchell’s Stack where there is a free car park nearby.

The old pit sites are graphic reminders that the landscape in South Yorkshire has been reshaped over 150 years. Between the 1850’s and 1900 the once sleepy area turned into a boom area, although it brought large spoil heaps, spinning pit wheels, pollution, chemical plants, filthy rivers and canals, and sooty streets to the area. It was said that long ribbons of black smoke emitted by pit chimneys could blot out the sun for hours.

That said the area has been greatly regenerated and now the whole area is known as Netherwood Country Park. It has turned one of the ugliest spots in South Yorkshire into a celebration of nature. It is a great area to explore.

The cache is a very small plastic tub with log sheet, pencil and eraser. Please ensure it is well hidden. Take a while to look around and imagine the scene below you.
