Benchmark recovery is a fun, fascinating, and at times frustrating subgenre of the geocaching game. It’s full of terminology and tricks all its own. There are two kinds of coordinates provided - those described as ‘adjusted’ on the listing are very accurate, but the coordinates described as ‘scaled’ can be off by as much as a quarter-mile! When the coordinates are listed as ‘scaled,’ the recovery notes provided (see below) are the best way to hunt down that elusive marker. It can be challenging to look for old marks, as the descriptions may be vague or often refer to physical objects no longer found in the area. If you enjoy sleuthing and old historical records & maps, and are good at following directions, you might just be a good benchmark hunter…

This cache gives you a mild exercise in following previous recovery notes to find the mark. You’ll benefit from using the benchmark resources on the geocaching.com website, as well as looking at the photos and the waypoints provided.
Do not attempt this journey unless you're competent at off-trail navigation in wooded/marshy areas.
A compass (independent of your GPS) is recommended. As portions of the trip are in wet areas, knee-high boots and a head net are helpful in the non-winter months. Please replace cache in elevated location as shown in gallery. Moose, bear and coyotes are frequently seen in this area. Keep children and dogs close to you, and be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Keep the search challenging for others - don't post photos which give away the actual location of the cache with your log on this server. I reserve the right to delete logs which don't follow this directive. Good luck!
