Puffin Cove Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Naefearjustbeer: Due to the growth in popularity of the nc500 route and the fact that this spot has been listed on google maps there has been a huge increase in non geocaching visitors who have been parking dangerously on and beside the road, because of this the land owners have fenced off the parking area to restrict folk from accessing the cove. I no longer feel that this is a safe or an appropriate place to have a cache hidden as as such i will remove it and archive the cache. Thanks to all the respectful visitors over the years but this has been a case of the masses of disrespectful visitors have caused a road safety and erosion issue in the area.

Geocache Description:

Please check out the Geocaching Association of Great Britainoffering support for Geocachers in the UK

This cache is quite a difficult one to get to. It requires stout footwear and a bit of scrambling down a stream bed. It is well worth the effort, and when you get to it take a moment to study the stack and natural arch formed in the cliffs. If you look at the stack you can see that it is covered in hundreds if not thousands of Puffins (assuming you visit at the right time of year). You can park your car at these co-ordinates N 58 33.352 W 003 50.159 and follow the main road west until you get to N 58 33.029 W 003 50.687. Here you will find a rough track to follow, not suitible for a car, though it is passible using a mountain bike. Once you reach the end of this track near the small pool with duck hides round it, follow the stream down to the coast. This is where you start to get to the rough terrain and you have to do a bit of scrambling to get down into the cove.
The cache is a clear tupperware style box and contains:-
Hedge "D" Hog with Travel Bug attached
Bag of coins
2 Aftershock shot glasses
Bottle of shampoo
Old fly fishing reel
3 fishing flies
A cork
A small plant pot
A night light candle
A pair of foam ear plugs
If you take the flies let me know if you catch any fish with them as they have all been tied by myself and have all caught brown trout on Loch Watten
