Geocache Description:

Stunning views of Alpine and Bon Tempe Lakes and the surrounding watershed.

Azalea Hill offers views of the tallest peaks in Marin, the Tamalpais watershed, and beyond. The hill was a popular spot for stargazing before the water district closed their land at sunset. As one rounds the hill, there is a beautiful meadow above Bon Tempe Lake. There are unsual rocks and serpentine ferns. Near the cache, Alpine Lake stands out below.

The walk to the site is about one-third of a mile, skirting up and around the hill to the broad expanse. It is a short hike, but there are wonderful areas to explore around it and benchmarks in the area.

The cache is a green ammo box that was filled with things that either myself or my daughter would like to find. It is visible from the right angle, so there is no need to move rocks or wade in the middle of thorny bushes. However, there are lots of places where a cache could be hidden, so look carefully and take care to return it so that casual hikers will not spot it.

For longer hikes, there is a trail that takes one down to Liberty Gulch and the lakes below -- one can walk to the Bon Tempe or Birthday Bash caches from here and avoid the parking fees at Sky Oaks.
