Geocache Description:

There were Leap Events for Breakfast and Dinner so it seemed reasonable to have one for lunch also.

Location: Mary's Country Kitchen, Rt 4, Stanton   (It is located between the east bound and west bound lanes of Rt 4  and is  accessible from both East and West Delaware Route 4    We will have tables in the back room reserved and will order off the menu.

Time:   Noon to 1:30 pm

Date: February 29

Quite often I have lunch with two other geocachers on Mondays at this location.  Realizing that Leap day is on a Monday and I would be here anyway, it seemed logical to make the lunch an official geocaching event.  This will also make it possible for local geocachers to attend 3 Leap day events or just do lunch if that is what they want.

What is Leap Day and how often does it occur? Answer once every 4 years and you would be close but  not exactly correct.

The exact number of days for the Earth to complete one rotation of the sum (which we call a year) is 365.2425 days.  So how to make the calander exactly correct:

Adding a leap year every 4 years adds 1/4 to the 365-day year or increases the average year-length by 0.25 days = 365.25 days, close but not exact

Omitting a leap year every 100 years subtracts 1/100 = 0.01 days from the 365-day year.

Adding a leap year every 400 years adds 1/400 = 0.0025 days to the 365-day year.

Omitting a leap year every 4000 years subtracts 1/4000 = 0.00025 days from the 365-day year.

When these are combined, the corrected average year-length is 365 +0.25 - 0.01 + 0.0025 - 0.00025 = 365.24225 days/year.
