Geocache Description:

Found in the slightly less visited side of Hampstead Heath - West Heath, which is a favorite walking spot with our Geodog. This cache was originally called Lean on Me as the site consisted of a tree that had fallen and was leaning onto another tree, under which the cache was hidden. Since then the tree which was leaning has fallen and can be seen on the floor next to the original supporting tree where the cache remains underneath. See pictures for spoiler

Covered in beautiful woodland, West heath borders Golders Hill Park and is also home to the Pergola and Hill Gardens.

The Pergola is a large Edwardian structure built in the early 20th century: A raised terraced and colonnaded walkway, constructed to connect the two gardens belonging to a house then known as The Hill, which were separated by a footpath with public right-of-way. The Pergola is particularly beautiful in early summer, when the many climbing plants which are overgrowing it--such as jasmine, honeysuckle, rambling roses and wisteria--are in bloom. It also offers a stunning sight in autumn when the colours of all these plants and the trees in the Hill Garden are changing. The Hill Garden, a little park with a formal pond, gently sloping lawns and many benches to sit, is the garden that is farther away from the house; it is, like the Pergola, open to the public. The house, now called Inverforth House, and its adjoining garden are privately owned.

Golders Hill Park is also a formal park adjoining the West Heath. It occupies the site of a large house that was bombed during World War II. It has an expanse of grass, with a formal flower garden a duck pond and a separate water garden that leads to a separate area for deer, near a recently-renovated small zoo. The zoo has donkeys, maras, ring-tailed lemurs, ring-tailed coatis, white-cheeked turacos and European Eagle Owls among other animals. There are also tennis courts, a butterfly house and a putting green.

The Pergola and Hill gardens can be accessed from Inverforth Close, off North End Way. Leaving the Hill Garden, you come on to West Heath: were we have planted two Caches prior to the entrance of Golders Hill Park. Both Caches can also be accessed independently without a visit to either The Pergola or Golders Hill Park. There is parking situated along West Heath Road which is Pay and Display between 12:30pm and 2:30pm on Mondays to Fridays. All others times are free.
