Geocache Description:

I had to get away from the hustle and bustle of downtown John Day after work so I went out to this mountain top and placed a cache.

This is right at 27 miles Northeast by East from downtown JD and most of the way is on paved highway 26. At the top of Dixie Summit pass, hang a North onto the dirt road - # 2610 hard right and the first dirt road to the left. When you are going past the rope tow at the ski area, your heading in the right direction on the right road.

At this juncture, I should tell you a little bit about this road. It sucks. I would recommend a high clearance rig with good traction tires. The first four (4) miles on the dirt road will be very rough but if your careful, you might make it all the way to the parking spot in your town ride. I would take Red’s ride, but not if she was along to see where I was at.

The last 1.20 miles. This section of the road might make you pinch and spit foam rubber if your nervous about narrow, steep, rough, washed-out, sloughing roads. You will be required to either hike up from the parking spot at N 44:34.217 X W 118:37.530 or have a 4x4 setup of one kind or another with high clearance, Volvo’s need not apply, and good traction tires to drive to the top. Not a good place to be skittish, hammer it and hang on. After all, those trees below the road should stop you and if not, that other road way down there might. Or shanks mare, your option.

Now once you get to the top, I parked next to the garage and hiked around on the ridge top to where I placed the cache. There is a benchmark awaiting you here also, if your into that. And if you wander around there very much, see if you can spot “Dixie”. It looks like someone was very bored at one time or the next. There where a few critter tracks and beds and “other” sign of mammals as well as a couple of Kestrels hunting around the top of the knob. Heck, I even found the old telegraph wire while wandering around. As well as a lot of old cans and carbon pile batteries.

One the way back out, there where “Large and Growly” tracks in my pickup tracks. Looked like mamma and two cubs. As well as a couple Snowshoes crossing in the headlights and one very fast Mulie Doe.

I would recommend calling the Prairie City Ranger District about the road if you try this in the spring. Not sure when it is opened from the snowfall’s this place will get.

Take a picnic and optics and plan on staying for a while. You just might spot something in one of the large meadows on the hillsides. Oh, one last thing, your looking for an ammo can. Okay hide, not hard but sheltered for the snowfalls. Please replace it back with the stone over it.
