Wilbur's Watch Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

camnpete: It looks like this one is gone. I don't know anything about the "alternate cache"...it's certainly nothing I hid, nor received any information from the hider. I hate to archive this as it is a beautiful location, but it looks like the time has come. I'll try to hide another cache next time I'm in the area. Thanks to all who have enjoyed this experience.

Geocache Description:

This cache is located at Wilbur's Watch, a beautiful spot overlooking Pigeon Point lighthouse, Ano Nuevo, and the San Mateo coast.

Wilbur's Watch is a newly opened lookout on the hill behind Pigeon Point Lighthouse. It's named after Cole Wilbur, who was the Executive Director of the David and Lucile Packard Foundation from 1976 to 1999. He was dedicated to the preservation of California's native landscape, and on his watch the Foundation helped to protect thousands of acres of land, from the California Coast to the Sierra Nevada.

To reach the lookout, drive to a small parking area on Pigeon Point Road. This road is on the EAST side of Hiway 1, and can be reached by turning East (right if coming from Santa Cruz or left from Half Moon Bay) at the entrance to the lighthouse. Then go 3/4 mile to the parking area. There is also a turn onto Pigeon Point Road about a quarter of a mile south of the lighthouse entrance. From there the parking area is only a couple of hundred yards from Hiway 1.

You'll have a very easy one mile walk up the hill to the lookout. Be sure to look for wildflowers, animal scat in the trail, birds and other wildlife. Use the telescope at Wilbur's Watch during winter and early spring to look for migrating Gray Whales.

We visited the cache on July 7 and ended up with a bunch of ticks on both of us and Jake the GeoDog. I don't know if they could sense Jake was coming, but we spent a fair amount of time in the parking area pulling ticks off all three of us. While this wouldn't prevent me from returning, visitors this summer should be aware of the ticks.

This is a magnetic microcache, but oddly there is only one location where the magnet works. See the hint if necessary. Please be sure to make note of exactly how the cache is stuck to it's location, as this seems to be the only way to keep it from falling to the ground.
