Geocache Description:

The cache is past a stand of old redwoods on a beautiful hillside overlook.

Roy’s Redwoods is home to a small grove of redwoods that was preserved through the efforts of local environmentalists. It contains Oak, Bay, grasslands, and more. Some of the redwoods here are the tallest in Marin County.

Before the area became an open space preserve, its owners included Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew and Paul Revere's grandson. The Roy brothers owned extensive lands as part of their dairy and gave the area their name. Its history includes being the home to a hippie commune. And George Lucas once filmed part of the Ewok Adventure here.

The access road is about .4 miles from Sir Francis Drake Blvd on Nicasio Road. Watch for the gates on either side of the road. My GPSr put the parking coordinates around 38° 01.234N, 122° 39.685W – there were lots of trees around, but these coordinates should get you close enough.

You enter through a meadow surrounded by bay trees and towering redwoods. To get to the cache, follow the Roy's Redwoods Loop that begins to the left or take the Meadow Trail through the redwoods.

If you follow the trail from the meadow, there is a huge ring of redwoods to the right, known as the "Fairy Ring" or "Council Tree." The commune was once based here. On the left, there is another large redwood, with a circumference of 38 feet. The trail continues until it meets the Loop.

The Loop takes one above the main stand of redwoods, along grasslands and light woods. A bridge crosses a seasonal stream, and there are abundant wild flowers in the Spring. There are additional paths from the redwoods leading up towards the cache, but you might also run into poison oak if you take one of the side trails.

Please make sure that the cache is secure when you replace it. To reach the cache location, you will be walking past bay trees and oaks infected with SOD. The land managers ask that you clean/disinfect your shoes if the trails are wet or muddy.
