Geocache Description:

A Monument to the Greed of Man, in Western North Carolina. Beside a street, an easy cache, but an interesting historical find.

This is a virtual cache. The cache is a monument to the US Army post Fort Butler where the Cherokee Indians were gathered in Western North Carolina to begin the relocation march known as "The Trail of Tears." The purpose of this relocation was so that thier land could be confiscated by settlers and stolen. Here at the confluence of the Valley and Hiwassee rivers, General Winfield Scott, made famous in the Mexican-American War, commanded the Army relocation forces and used Fort Butler as his headquarters. Check out this web site for more historical information.
(visit link)

The fort has been lost to time and development, but in the general vicinity of it's original location is a marble stone marking the location believed to be where it was. The area is a neigborhood and has trash and weeds all around. To receive credit for finding this cache, email me either a photo of the monument or the name of the orginization that donated it.

***Hey all, 2016 update! Thanks for all the kinds words about this virtual. It is very old now, almost 15 years!" almost 800 finds! When I "placed" it, it was a rock on the side of the street in some weeds and vines. In the time since, it has become a nice little park where you can have a picnic. I can only believe that all the Geocachers being seen coming by to visit had a lot to do with the town cleaning up the area and making something out of it. Thank you all for the visits. I knew about this place as my cousin, since passed, lived about 5 houses down the street. Take a look at all the pictures that have been posted on the website, starting at the beginning and ending most recently to check out the changes that have taken place since this cache was first logged in 2003!***
