GeoHenge Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Doodledogs: Time for a change. The small path leading to the cache is very hard to find now. I intend putting one cache at the stone circle itself and another somewhere in the wood. I've identified a couple of likely spots for caches and will place them soon. I've removed this original one, so don't go searching for it!

Geocache Description:

Turn left (if heading north, and obviously turn right if heading south) at the Blackhall roundabout (near Morrisons) on the A96 just west of Inverurie. Travel 2 miles (go past Newseat carpark!) and park at stone circle car park. From here there is a short walk up to the stone circle. The terrain becomes muddy at times in the wood making wellies a good idea in wet weather or winter, especially for kids.

Walk round the stone circle (after admiring and reading about it!)and follow the path up to the start of Aquorthies Forestry Commission wood (who kindly agreed to let us place our first cache here). Walk straight down the main track ahead of you. It turns left at the bottom and the GPS distance/time will rise, but have faith! Keep following the main track! You will then reach the smaller path on your left (believe the GPS and don't turn off too soon as there are a couple of red herrings before the correct path) Follow this path only a short distance to reach the cache site. Cache itself is on your left not far from the path at all. The cache is a tupperware click style container. You can walk on from the cache, or turn back. (I suppose it depends if you have a dog with you or not!) The path goes on to your left, but soon you turn right and go round in a circle. There are many paths all through the woods you can take. It takes about 40mins altogether, allowing for logging the cache etc. There are many Recumbant Stone Circles in this area and Easter Aquorthies is a great one. It was built about 5000years ago using pink, grey and red granite which is unusual to see in one stone circle. There is lots of information about it at the site. Thanks to thehaggishunter for this lovely photograph of the circle....
