Geocache Description:

Located in a pleasant village in County Weford.

Castlebridge is located on the north side of Wexford Harbour. The name is thought to derive from the ancient castle which once stood where the present Church of Ireland stands.

The dominant feature of the village is the collection of tall grain buildings of stone and slate, which date from 1804. The mill was originally driven by water power, a mill pond and head race having been built to take water from the Castlebridge River between 1800 and 1825. Today, the mill pond has been drained and used as a site for new corn stores. While the milling of corn was the main activity at Castlebridge in the years up to 1865, malting of barley gradually developed to become the principle activity thereafter. Malted barley was first supplied to Guinness in Dublin in 1836 and continued until 1975.

The village has a further connection to Guinness. In November 1951, Sir Hugh Beaver, managing director of Guinness, was out hunting fowl on the North Slob. Some Golden Plover passed by the hunting party. That evening, in Castlebridge House, it was realised that it was not possible to confirm whether or not the Golden Plover was Europe's fastest bird. Realising that similar questions were being debated the length and breadth of the country, Sir Hugh commissioned the first Guinness Book of Records to compile popular facts.

Aside from the beautifully maintained mill buildings, modern Castlebridge has several crumbling reminders of past glory days. Behind the small village park is a sad building with what must have once been a beautiful greenhouse to the rear. Unfortunately access to this structure is prohibited. Across from the park is a building with the name "Castlebridge Reading Rooms". In this building local people would come nightly to read or have books and newspapers read to them. Various other social activities and clubs have been based there over the past 100 years. Today they seem to lie idle.

Hopefully you will enjoy your visit to Castlebridge!
