The River Bend Foodbank is a non-profit organization that collects and distributes food to hunger relief charities in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. Food comes from various sources in the food industry, like grocery stores and wholesalers, that have thousands of pounds of food to give away – food that would otherwise be thrown away. They warehouse the food, and with help from volunteers, sort, pack and redistribute it to the community. In 2016, they were responsible for distributing nearly 11 million meals to those in need.
When you enter the building, simply tell the secretary why you're there. I encourage you bring along non-perishables or make a monetary donation (a $1 donation = 5 meals!).
