Geocachers of West Tennessee

One stage of the series.

The first ever West Tennessee Mega Multi Cache is HERE!

GCNNTZ

**This area was completely flooded in 2011, under about 10 feet of water. The cache has probably moved from its original placement location but seems to be still intact. We will try to find a better location to stash and update coordinates.** To complete this cache series you must successfully hunt 14 separate caches, hidden by 14 different geocachers in the West Tennessee area. The names of all of these caches will begin with WEST TN MEGA MULTI. At each of these caches you will be given a clue that will enable you to determine the coordinates of the final cache, a LARGE metal box containing an assortment of above average trade items, items in the $5-15 range.

For this leg of the cache, you are looking for a standard 7.62 ammo can loaded with typical swag. There's also a disposable camera. Take your picture and leave the camera in the cache. If there are no more exposures, make a note in your log and I'll grab the camera and develop the film. I'll post a URL for the pictures in a note in the log.

Expect bugs, briars, poison ivy/oak/kudzu, maybe snakes and water, too! I saw deer tracks, beaver chews, and several shed snake skins. I have never seen a venomous snake around here, but I know they're here. If it has rained recently, you will need boots. Heck, you may even want to wait a few days. Since I'm not allergic to poison ivy/oak, I can't tell you if I ran into any while placing the cache, but I sure saw what appeared to be the itchy stuff.

This cache is near the border of Frayser and Shelby Forest. Don't do this one in shorts and you should put on a coat of bug spray before you start as the skeeters are pretty rough.

If you look at the map, this appears to be a large park ... Firestone Park. However, that is not the case. Back in the mid 80's, the City of Memphis purchased most of this area and built up the swamp. (key word = SWAMP) The Memphis Police Academy was built along with an indoor firing range, an outdoor firing range, an outdoor rifle range, an outdoor sniper range, and an outdoor/indoor SWAT/TACT "urban assault village". That's an interesting place since they use "simunition" and their actual weapons. Simunition replaces the lead bullet with a paintball.

In 2001, the City moved the fire department training center from Flicker Street to this property. The academy has the main building plus an apparatus storage building. There are also two live fire training buildings and several live fire containers. Additionally, there is a live fire car scenario as well as a live fire propane tank scenario.

In 2002, the police department moved their heliport from Dovecrest near the penal farm to this facility. The heliport houses three Bell Jetrangers and a new A-Star.

What remains of this "park" is very little. There are two football fields and a small section of trees and swamp that separates the fields from the MFD and MPD academies. Guess which section the cache is located. **insert evil grin smiley here**

You probably won't wander onto the Fire and Police training property. But, if you find yourself inside the fenced area, don't venture too far North. The Memphis Police Department sometimes has their rookies learning to shoot guns up there. Some have better aim than others.

Also, should you find yourself in the middle of a police manhunt training exercise, you might be asked to postpone your hunt until their exercise is complete.
