Geocache Description:

This cache is the 10th point on the Dartmoor Forest boundary, as established by the 1240 Perambulation. More details about the Perambulation can be found on the cache page for the Dartmoor Forest Bonus. On the front page of the logbook is an adjustment to be made to the Bonus co-ordinates, which you will need to find the Bonus.

This part of the boundary takes you past Babeny Farm, one of the few remaining ancient tenements on Dartmoor. The farm has been here since before the perambulation, and the farmers and their families that worked here all those years ago may even have watched as the knights’ entourage marched by.

Below the farm, a bridleway follows the south bank of the brook in what is called Babeny Rit, and crosses at Babeny Clapper Bridge to head down to the East Dart river. Where the two rivers join there are now some steps where there used to be another clapper bridge which carried and old trail called Rit Lane across the river towards Brimpts Farm.

If doing this cache as a standalone, the closest parking is at Dartmeet (waypoint below), and there is a flat riverside walk to the cache, which is very muddy in places but easy to follow. Start off by following the footpath sign above Badger’s Holt, signposted “Footpath to Cator Gate”. When you get to where the Walla Brook enters the East Dart, head up the Walla Brook a short way until you reach Babeny Clapper bridge (waypoint below). Cross there and head back down again and cross the Dart at the stepping stones.

If doing the Perambulation as a route, the next point on is Dartmeet. You can either follow the bridleway up to Brimpts Farm, or retrace your steps to Babany Clapper and follow the riverside path, which is flat.

Please note that there is no parking at Babeny Farm, or the approach road to it.
