There
haven't been many geocaching events in NW Iowa so tonedog52 and
I
decided to host one. The headquarters for the event will be at the
"Silver Sioux
County Park". It is located about 8 miles south of Cherokee
on Highway 59 and then
about 2 miles west on gravel road "600th St." and the 1 mile north
on Silver Sioux Road.
From Quimby go a mile east on Highway 31 and turn North (Left) on
to Silver Sioux Road.
Watch for Silver Sioux signs,
The campground is approximately 2 miles. Silver Sioux Park
encompasses about 160 acres.
The Little Sioux River and Silver Creek run through, or next to the
park, thus the name.
The event will officially start at 07:00 on Saturday morning, May
16, and end early Sunday
morning, May 17. Silver Sioux has a very large barn that we
will be using as our headquarters.
It is well suited to large groups and makes a great sheltered area
to operate from and meet in.
Silver Sioux has 33 modern campsites @ $15/night including showers.
This area is just
East of the barn. The county does not take reservations for
camping but has agreed to set
aside a block of campsites for us.
There are 10 primitive campsites available with fire rings for
$10/night including showers.
There is room for more tents but not with fire rings so no
campfires at those sites.
The county has two other parks nearby with primitive only campsites
with no shower
facilities. There are 15 of these are available for
$5/night.
Please contact me (Wonder Boy) directly for more information
on camping at the county parks.
Camping is also available at Spring Lake Park on the south side of
Cherokee.
Reservations can be made there by calling 712-225-2715.
They have 40 modern campsites available @ $15/night including
showers.
They have 35 tent sites available @ $5/night including
showers.

Tonedog52 is planning a float trip down the Little Sioux
River from Wescott Park in Cherokee
to Silver Sioux Park on Sunday morning. We have three canoes
available and the county has
six canoes and two kayaks available. He plans on having 20 to
30 new permanent caches along
the river. Since the river is unpredictable these caches may
not be available for a long period of
time. This could be on opportunity to obtain some caches
that may be harder to obtain later on
or not at all. |
| 08:00 |
Event officially closes. |
We will have computers available to download information
directly to your GPS, or we can put the information
on your flash drive. We will have CD's available, for $1.00,
with the days cache information in a .gpx file. All
cache information will be managed with GSAK as a .gpx file, or any
other file that GSAK can handle. If you have
an odd, unique or older GPS bring your data cable with you.
If your not sure just bring your cable. We will
have
the data available on paper as well.
I will try to update this page each Sunday until the event, or more
often if needed.

01-31-09 Update: Being the gracious and generous person
that he is, tonedog52 has decided to give
an ammo can to the first 50 registered cachers. If you cache
under one name you will get one ammo
can. Also there has been quite an interest in the canoe trip
on Sunday morning. Tonedog52 has found
8 more canoes to borrow. When the free ones are gone you will
have to rent any additonal or bring
your own. So if you are interested be sure to contact him
soon. WB

June 11 by MoValleyGal (1279 found) We've been waiting for the group picture, are you still having it touched up? Ha
[view this log] | May 23 by Tonedog52 (1185 found) Hi Folks, I have a cache that was placed on the gps's for the event that is not yet published: "The Knob on Rainey Knob", I need to move it a few feet to get it published....I'll be doing that tommorow....so look for it.Sorry, I didn't catch the reviewer note when I first submitted. If you logged...count it, when it comes up. Thanks.
[view this log] | May 21 by HC@MC (918 found) A special thanks to Wonderboy and Tonedog52 for a truly wonderful event. All of the planning, preparation, and effort where evident throughout this weekend guys. Thanks so much for a great time and for fostering the good will of Geocaching and Geocachers through your efforts. Your time and efforts were truly appreciated by all.
[view this log] | May 19 by kbraband (573 found) I had a great time at this event. Thanks to ToneDog and WonderBoy for putting this together and their months of work placing caches, working with the Chamber of Commerce, the area businesses, the volunteers, Cherokee County Conservation, etc. And thanks to all the geocachers I met at the barn and out on the trail and on the river. Correction to one of my captions: That's Victory Lane, not VK2AAQ, in the kayak photo. [This entry was edited by IowaAdmin on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 7:05:10 AM.]

| May 18 by 5-4-Fun (3897 found) Dipping some TB's...had them in the geocaching bag but forgot to share them at the event. Since they were with us they should get the mileage that they deserve.
