Cross the line Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

brokev7: I will archive this cache as many cachers had difficulty to find it and I am unable to maintain it right now. I'm sorry to let this one go. Irazu really deserves a cache, I hope someone else will put a cache in this National Park.

Geocache Description:

The Irazú Volcano is an active volcano in Costa Rica, situated in the Cordillera Central, close to the city of Cartago. Since the 1963–65 eruption, the volcano has been dormant, although frequent earthquake swarms show that magma is still moving about beneath the volcano.

The park is remarkable because of its surreal lunar landscape. There are two main craters, one is called the “Diego de la Haya” crater that contains a strangely colored lake (some days its light green and others its red) and the other is 300 meters (900 feet) deep.

The vegetation has undergone considerable alteration due to the eruptions. Today it's possible to see areas with sparse plant growth within the rim of the craters. Patches of primary and secondary forest can also be found. Wildlife in Irazu is very scarce. Some of the mammals that have been seen near the summit are the eastern cottontail (species of rabbit), coyotes, armadillos, porcupine, weasels, and tiger cats. As far as birds are concerned, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and mountain robins are a common sight, unlike the eastern meadowlark, and long-tailed ptilogonys that have small recorded populations.

From the top, it is possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans on a clear day. However, such clear days are very rare indeed and it is typical for the volcano's summit to be covered in cloud for much of the time.

This national park fits into a half a day or a one-day itinerary, since long walks or other activities aren’t possible. Visiting hours are from 8:00 am to 3:30 pm, and you will be required to pay an entrance fee in order to get to this cache.

The black container is located at the far sight of the park near where the fence-line ends. Small items fit into this cache, and there is a pencil to sign the log.
