A great park that was recently opened. There is great information about the recent and not so recent past. Plus its a great place to take the kids to play.
Where you are standing are two distinct layers of geological material, the Oak Creek and Racine formations. The first 10 feet are loamy topsoil and imported fill. The next 10-20 feet are unconsolidated material containing glacial sediments of the Oak Creek Formation that were deposited during the Pleistocene Epoch. Below the unconsolidated sediment is the uppermost bedrock unit, the Racine Formation. Ranging from 150 to almost 300 feet thick across Milwaukee County, the Racine Formation is of Silurian Period age and consists of light to bluish gray, fine-grained, dense, and well bedded dolomite. Certain layers of the Racine strata have abundant marine fossil. Features observed in Hartung Park's bedrock indicate that the Racine Formation originally formed as carbonate mud that slowly accumulated at the bottom of a quiet, shallow marine basin below the base of fair-weather waves during the Silurian Period. The resultant sediment eventually transformed into the dolomoitized bedrock that is present today.
