Geocache Description:

Wiley Park is set on the shore of Great Pond in Eastham. Great Pond is just one of a number of ponds collectively known as Glacial Park. At this location you'll learn how kettle ponds were formed.

There are some 365 freshwater ponds on Cape Cod. Most of these are kettle ponds. formed when blocks of ice from the last glacier became imbedded or covered by outwash materials, leaving depressions that filled with fresh water when ground water rose to intersect them.

The buried ice was well insulated from the warmer post-glacial temperatures and may have persisted for several thousand years Kettle holes that are deep enough to expose the water table contain ponds or lakes. In many kettle ponds, processes have smoothed the shoreline so that the ponds are almost circular.

Upon reaching the informational kiosk located at the posted coordinates along the edge of Great Pond, read to find out more about how kettle ponds were formed and find the answers to the following questions in order to log this cache.

1) What kind of plains make up most of the Cape Cod Landscape?

2) What do those plains consist of?

3) When were the fresh water ponds formed on Cape Cod?

Not only do you need to send me the answers to the above questions, but you also need to post a photo taken of yourself with the pond in the background or the kiosk (without allowing any of the answers to be found out through the photo) with your log. I hope that this will cut down on internet finds as I believe one should actually visit this location rather than just doing research.
