Geocache Description:

Traditional cache on a very small island.

A century ago the San Juan Islands were the largest producer of lime on the west coast. Roche Harbor on San Juan Island was the largest of the quarries and kilns but there were others scattered around the county. Old-timers have told me that the structure where this cache is hidden was a small limekiln used to process lime mined in the Lopez sound area. The cache is in an ammo box with an assortment of small trinkets assembled quickly from various bins and boxes in the garage. The real treasure here is the location. The island is owned by the San Juan Preservation Trust, a private non-profit dedicated to saving undeveloped places in San Juan County. Visitors are allowed but collecting of plants is forbidden. Be careful approaching the cache as the rocks can be slippery. The terrain difficulty is high because of the need for a boat but I’d rate the last 100 ft. as 3 or 4 in difficulty even if you could drive to the location. Enjoy the wonderful scenery and marvel at the work it took to build even a small structure on such a remote island.
