Vitam Impendere Vero Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

Room1009: I will not be able to get out here in the foreseeable future to replace this cache, so sadly I am archiving it. Many thanks to the 139 cachers who have found it and a special thanks to the 4 of you who gave it a favorite point. It had a good 7 year run. Sadly, I fear the resident travel bug is lost. This is a great spot and maybe a local cacher can hide a new one here. Cache on!

Geocache Description:

Vitam Impendere Vero - Live for the Truth

This cache is available for adoption. Message me via my profile if you are interested.

Easy park and grab along U.S. 50/400. Could be muddy if it has been raining or snowing. No worries about muggles out here. This is a small lock n lock with room for a few trade items. There are some old wheat straw pennies and a geo-token to start off. Please close the lid securely to keep water out, but do not over-tighten it.

I've driven past this monument numerous times and wondered what it was. I finally got around to doing some research on it, and this is what I learned. Vernon Kropp of Winfield, Kansas owned land both to the north and south of here. It is believed he placed this marker at this intersection to identify his holdings, to furnish a landmark for his employees, and, although only his initials appear, perhaps to perpetuate his name by a permanent structure. Vernon Kropp died in 1969.

"Vitam Impendere Vero" literally translates to "Live for the Truth." I also found this translation: "In truth, death hovers over life." No one I talked to seems to know anything about the coat of arms. What do you think it stands for?

There used to be a virtual cache here, but it was archived in 2009. (Thanks to Flatland Reviewer for this information.)

Please feel free to add any additional information about this monument in your log, and I will add it to the description.

Be sure and visit the cache one mile to the east of here (Highway 50 Quick Stop GC1JBDN). The container is awesome!

Congratulations to Lee! and Msjules for
being the First To Find--after 72 days!
