Inbetween Thame, Albury & Tiddington
lies Rycote, home to a 15th century chapel, dense woodland &
picturesque views & Countryside. This cache is set around the
chapel itself & takes you on a 2-3 mile circular walk spanning
the surrounding area.
This is a 5 part multi cache. Along the way you will be asked to
find 2 small cache boxes containing digits, & to complete 2
virtual tasks which will also supply you with numbers, all in order
to complete a final set of coords. The map which you can see will
guide you in your quest. The geocache icons which scatter it show
the correct direction you should take for best results. Please make
sure to stick to this trail at all times as many areas close by are
private, & making other plans could cause you to miss an
important landmark. The coords above are where you should enter the
woods, there are a couple of small parking locations close by but
we will leave this upto you. Now simply make your way to the
following locations using the clues we supply you with to find your
goals....
Location (1) The old tree: N 51°44.143
W 001°01.599
At this location you should find yourself by the entrance to a
field. To your left you should see a sign saying 'private no
entry'. Just to the right of this sign is a large old tree with a
series of holes running up its trunk. The cache can be found inside
one of these holes & is almost certainly above head height.
Inside you will find your first number. This
number='A'
continue along the footpath until you reach Rycote chapel. From
Thameshistory.net: 'The History of Rycote chapel
dates back to 1449 when it was built by Richard Quatremayne,
councillor in the service of Richard, Duke of York and later Edward
IV. The interior contains original furniture. The house which it
served was severely damaged by fire in 1745. The chapel served the
local villagers and the people at the adjacent manor house,
including guests passing from Oxford to London. There has also been
talk of ghostly activity at Rycote Chapel, the ghost of a Tudor
Lady apparently haunts it. The custodian of the chapel in 1973, Mr
Clifford saw her moving around the outside of the chapel and under
the giant yew tree. There are also ghosts of a brown-robed monk;
the Earl of Leicester who supposedly murdered his wife, Amy
Robsart; and Sir Thomas More, whose daughter Cicely married Giles
Heron of Rycote. Giles and Thomas were executed
together.'
Location (2) Rycote Chapel: N
51°44.195 W 001°02.116
Once at the suggested coords you should be stood facing the side
wall of the chapel with the information booth to your left, if not
make your way there & look upwards. How many Gargoyles guard
the location? This
answer='B'
The footpath at this point becomes slightly unclear. Walk directly
through the chapel & where the road forks (only metres from the
chapel garden) turn back on yourself to the right. You will soon
see the footpath continuing to your left over a stile. Follow this
path until you reach a farm. Walk straight through following the
footpath symbols on the otherside. You will finaly reach
Albury.
Location (3) Albury Church: N
51°44.439 W 001°03.114
This secluded church is home to a number of graves. Find one of the
largest which is home to an entire family. You are looking for the
resting place of 'Charles Clare Regnart' & the Year of his
birth which is 18CD
Make your way through the small village turning left after the
church again following the footpath. You will have to walk past a
large house & gardens which are home to an enormous tree,
unmissable to your left. Soon after you will enter fields &
then cross into woods for the second time, passing another huge
tree along the way.
Location (4) The river bank: N
51°44.264 W 001°03.068
Stand by the gate into the woods facing them & turn directly
left. Follow the river bank to the 4th clump of trees just right of
a fallen trunk. Search behind the roots waterside. Enclosed is
answer
'E'
Congratulations, you should now have all the information necessary
to complete the cache. Add the answers you have collected to the
following:
N 51°4A.81D W
001°0B.CEC
You will locate the cache along the same path. After finding it a
simple walk along Rycote lane will lead you back to your car. We
hope you enjoy your day in the area & that you have an
interesting time learning more about this fascinating bit of
Oxfordshire history. Happy caching, Dan & Pid.
