Stegosaurus Butte (aka Choirboy, Taylor Knob, Hogback) is a small
bump along the middle fork of the Snoqualmie River. There is no
established trail, but an ambitious hiker can follow the boot
trails and occasional flags to the top. Expect a short but
challenging hike 2-3 miles round trip with 1100 feet of elevation
gain. Consult your topo map before starting out and remember to
bring some water.
The trail is difficult to follow at times and we did plenty of
cross-country route finding and bushwhacking, picking up a flag
here and there and looking for indications of previous hikers. I do
not recommend doing this at night as it would be very difficult to
find your way. There are also areas with significant cliffs. You
don't have to climb them, but they would be the end of most
geocachers if one was to take a wrong step. Once on the top, you
can do a bit of exploring and sneak peaks south down the valley of
Rainey Creek, north to Mt. Price and Preacher Mountain, and down
the glacier trough of the Middle Fork to the south face of Mt.
Garfield. You are looking for an ammo can.
To get there, take I-90 to exit 34. Pick up the Middle Fork Road
and travel about 11 miles to the Gateway Bridge parking area at N47
32.865 W121 32.220 (Northwest Forest Pass required). Cross the
bridge and turn right. A short walk along the river leads to a
not-so-steep section where we started our ascent. You can find a
description of a route in the book “55 Hikes Around
Snoqualmie Pass” by Harvey Manning. I also found this web
site helpful: (link). Be sure to find Old Man and Mossy Rock on the way up.
WARNING: Cache seekers assume all risks,
responsibilities, and mental condition involved in seeking this and
any cache. Make sure you are prepared (ie bring a buddy and the

essentials) and that your skill level matches your
ambition. |
