This is a multi-cache/mailbox that has the choice of two starting points at the parking lot of West Entrance of Panthertown, near Cashiers, NC. The hike will be 5 to 6 miles, according to the choices you make. Either choice will be great for scenery, so no losers and both will eventually get you there. This can be done singularly or in competing teams. If competing, you might just run into each other at some point. The above Coordinates are for the West Entrance Parking lot only.
Please Note: This is a strenuous hike and scramble. You should be in good physical condition and have good shoes for this one. Do not attempt in icy conditions. Bring a pencil, pad, camera, and compass and figure on spending at least a half a day having fun.
The Cache is a plastic gallon container w/screw-off lid. It contains, Flashlite, Screwdriver set, Deck of cards, four old ½ dollar coins, New Sunglasses, knife sharpener, Whistle, pencil sharpener, deadbolt, and TB. The Mail boxes are Film canisters with info enclosed in a plastic bag. They contain nothing but directions and coordinates for getting to the next mailbox.
You reach this area by Highway 64, turn North on (1020) Cedar Creek road, (about 3 miles East of Cashiers, NC), and drive 2.4 miles to Panthertown Valley sign on right.Turn right on 1021, and drive 3.8 miles to the West Entrance parking lot. Note: The last 0.4 is unpaved and can get a bit Cruddy after rains. If driving a regular car, you might consider parking at the end of pavement and walking in. .
At the trailhead, you will have two choices:
Choice “A”
Starts directly behind the Panthertown Map and info shelter. Your first coordinate will be
N° 35 10.278 W° 083 01.480 for A1 Mailbox Cache. You’ll go East a ways until you come to a small scrambling wall, that you must go up, and then shortly come to an old logging road, where you will take a right along the tops of the ridges with Panthertown down below. You will see a series of trails leading off to the left. Stay firm and stay right. You’ll come to a peak, then down, and just before some cliffs, look left and up, for an Oak and Pine limb trying to graft together. The mailbox is 25ft behind this oddity.
Choice“B”
Starts to the right of A and goes SE down the established road/trail. Your first coordinate will be
N°35 09 .837 W°083 02.525 for B1 Mailbox Cache. “Sign in” at the Forestry register, and go a short distance and take the first trail to your right. Keep going until you come to a scrambling wall going down. You must go down. You will hear some falls to your right after reaching the bottom of the rock. Follow your ears and GPS. The Cache is before the falls.
