According to legend, Charlemagne (742-814 AD) once had to sleep a
night on this huge quartzite rock during a hunting in the moors
because he and his men lost their way. The name of the village
"Mützenich" could be translated as "Not-The-Cap". To comfort him
one of his man offered Charlemagne his cap as a pillow whereupon he
said: "No, not the cap!" So it is said the name "Mützenich" came
into being.

Der Sage nach soll Kaiser Karl der Große
(742-814 AD) sich bei einem Jagdausflug im Hohen Venn verirrt haben
und gezwungen gewesen sein, auf diesem großen Quarzitfelsen zu
übernachten. Als Kopfkissen bot einer seiner Männer Karl dem Großen
seine Mütze an, der darauf hin sagte: "Die Mütze nicht". So soll
der Ortsname "Mützenich" entstanden sein. Der Felsen, nahe dem Ort
Mützenich, unmittelbar an der deutsch-belgischen Grenze gelegen,
heißt heute noch ganz allgemein "Kaiser Karl's Bettstatt".
Mehrere ausgeschilderte Wanderwege führen zur Bettstatt! Die
kürzeste Strecke habt ihr ab N50°34,127 E6°12,744. Der schönste Weg
beginnt bei N50°33,900 E6°11,770. Eine weitere Möglichkeit gibt es
hier: N50°34,000 E6°12,350. Wer mit der AVV kommen will, fährt bis Haltestelle
"Mützenich Zoll".
