The cache is located at the site of the 28-foot high replica of the original Iwo Jima memorial located at the recently refurbished Bicentennial Park in Fall River. It is said that the photo of the Flag raising, which appeared on the front page of newspapers on Feb. 25, 1945, was the single most popular photo ever published. Please be discreet when retrieving the cache and please return it in the exact same position. You will need to bring your own pen to log.
Brief History: On the morning of Feb. 19, 1945, the 4th and 5th Marine Divisions invaded Iwo Jima after an ineffective 72-hour bombardment of the island. The 28th Regiment, 5th Division, was ordered to capture Mount Suribachi. They reached the base of the mountain on the 
afternoon of Feb. 21, and by nightfall the next day had almost completely surrounded it. On the morning of Feb. 23, marines of Company E, 2nd Battalion, started the torturous climb up the rough terrain to the top. At about 10:30 a.m., men all over the island were thrilled by the sight of a small American flag flying from atop Mount Suribachi. That afternoon, when the slopes were clear of enemy resistance, a second, larger flag was raised by five marines and a Navy hospital corpsman: Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon H.Block, Pfc. Franklin R. Sousley of Hilltop, Ky., Pfc. Rene A. Gagnon of New Hampshire, Pfc. Ira Hayes and Bradley.
