Cokeburg Coke Ovens Cache Traditional Cache
SVC: Well I checked out the area last night and yes it is roped off. Maybe someone bought the land or it's just unstable...who knows. Anyway I feel that this cache has had a nice run and it's time to clear the site out for possible new caches. I want to thank everyone that has gone looking for this cache. Cokeburg Coke Ovens Cache, try saying that three times fast.
Cokeburg, along with towns like Library, Ellsworth and Muse, sprang up around the coal and steel industry. Cokeburg is one of those "patch" towns that dot the Western Pennsylvania countryside that most of us see on our day to day travels. And for you Sci-Fi people,it was the setting of the final episode of Quantum Leap.
Cokeburg, PA was a mining operation of Lackawanna Steel, and operations commenced in 1902. The mine was later owned by Bethlehem Steel and closed in the 1953. The coke ovens may or may not have still been in operation then. The operation at Cokeburg was also known for a time as Ellsworth No. 3.
This cache is a micro set among the beehive coke ovens. The reason that it gets a 1.5 for terrain is that there are some thorn bushes here and there. Please bring something to write with.
Parking can be found at 40º06.111N 080º03.478W on Franklin Rd. It's a huge dirt pull off thats big enough for 3 or 4 cars. The cache is located just below on Zamiska Rd. It's a public road about half the way, then it turns into a private driveway. You do not, I repeat, do not even need to park or drive on this road. The cache is located on public land.
Also when you come in to Cokeburg you'll see Royal Hydraulics. The building was once the company store. Enjoy the cache.
