Geocache Description:

Ahoy, Maties! Are you interested in finding some real treasure for a change? Well, this cache might have what you're looking for. All you need is a small boat and a desire to get wet. Read on to learn more.

According to legend, a pirate by the name of Captain Boonie hid some of his most valuable treasure on a group of islands near the east coast of Florida. To prevent thieves from plundering the cache, the captain wrote the coordinates for it on two separate rocks and threw them overboard at two different locations. For a long time, no one really knew exactly where these rocks were hidden, but recent sonar scans of the Indian River Lagoon have revealed two possible locations:

1) N28° 37.837 W80° 47.886 (Updated 4/26/03)

2) N28° 37.908 W80° 47.975 (Updated 6/13/03)

If these are really the two rocks mentioned in the legend, which I'm pretty sure they are, you'll be on your way to finding riches beyond belief. When you do find the cache, make sure you read the ship's logbook carefully. The Captain probably left a note detailing where he hid his most precious jewel (the bonus item).

It will take a little perseverance to find this cache and a willingness to get wet. The rocks, which are 5 lb engraved river rocks, could be in water up to 3 feet deep, so you might want to bring a snorkel and mask. The water is usually very clear in this part of the lagoon with the bottom being mostly sand with patches of grass.

In order to get to the island, you will need a boat . There are plenty of places to put one in along the nearby causeway, including a boat ramp. On weekends the islands can be a bit crowded, so try to be discrete when locating the cache.

The treasure consists of a Ship's Logbook, Capt. Billy Bone's T-Shirt, Jolly Roger's Pirate Flag, Skull & Crossbones Bandana, Capt. Boonies Parrot, a Book on Treasure Islands, Galileo's Spyglass, Gold from the New World, Polished Gem Stones and a surprise bonus item. When trading items, please use nautical items or things that a pirate might enjoy having.

Note: If you find the bonus, please replace it with another nice item for the next worthy pirate to find. The container is very small, so make sure the item is no bigger than 2 inches. You can make the bonus a surprise or tell everybody what it is in your log entry. It's up to you.

Good Luck!
